Physical Description:
Light Transformed is Light consists of a bicycle-turned-generator shaded by a photovoltaic solar module facing and powering an interactive video projection. The project can be physically broken down into 5 discrete elements:
1. Bicycle Generator:
The stationary bicycle will rotate a powerful ceramic magnet within a Plexiglas casing. The Plexiglas will be coiled in 150 feet of insulated magnetic wire. When the magnet rotates it creates a changing magnetic flux which induces a current in the wire. By increasing the amount of loops in the wire coil it is possible to regulate the output voltage. This homemade generator creates alternating current which will be used in two ways. In one the AC will power two distinct series circuits made up of LED's. The circuits will be in opposing directions so that in perfect sequence with the bicyclist's legs either one or the other will illuminate. Depending on the speed the bicyclist petals it will be possible to see the LED's reach maximum brightness then slowly dim. The gradual progression from bright to dim describes the peaks and valleys of the sine wave of the AC. That same sine wave will be embroidered on the projection screen.
2. LED Embroidered Projection Screen:
The 70" projection screen will be studded with upwards of 100 LED's of varying colors. The LED's will be organized in several circuits each controlled by a motion sensor which will react to the movements of the bicyclist or someone standing in front of the screen. The LED's will be arranged so that depending on which circuits are active a variety of different designs appear. The LED's will depict a mirror image of the bicyclist, a sine wave, the trajectory of the sun, and the face of the Green Man. Each design will relate to the concepts the entire piece engages including: sustainability, the sun's energy, the electrical cycle, and open systems.
3. Photovoltaic Module, Charge Controller, Lead-Acid Battery, and Inverter:
The solar module will be secured by four 8' metal beams rooted in the earth. If necessary the panel will be further secured by guy wires. The projector as well as the LED's and the laptop computer will be powered by a deep-cycle lead-acid battery charged by the PV module. The charge will be regulated through the charge controller to ensure the battery is not over-charged or over-drained. The direct current from the battery will be wired through an inverter which will output alternating current. The AC will power the projector and the computer as well as any compact fluorescent lights which will be used to illuminate the installation for safety.
4. Media Hardware:
An altered, though still functioning, Mac laptop computer will store the 6+ hours of original video. The laptop will be secured in a spray-painted, foam, steel, and found-object casing. The laptop will also contain several interactive visual programs which will take some input from the person using the redesigned computer keyboard. The programs will also respond to input from the motion sensors monitoring the environment. The visual output will be displayed on the projection screen. A ultra-portable 200 watt LCD projector will be powered by the lead-acid battery, and controlled by the computer.
5. Media Software:
The video projection will build upon those designs with a wide array of footage. Both found and staged material will be delivered. The video will stretch from creating an immersive environment in which the bicyclist is visually convinced they are moving through scenery and forget their actual surroundings, to footage that is a stark mirror of the activity going on which forces the user to become deeply aware of their environment. In addition some video will present such far-ranging techniques as: time-lapse, stills, slow-motion, narrative, animation, and abstraction.
Dimensions:
The entire installation will peak at a height of 9 feet, topped by the photovoltaic module. From end to end the piece will stretch about 15 feet between the bicycle, space reserved for unexpected creative movements, and the projection screen. The piece will be 6 feet wide extending from either side of the projection screen including the solar module holders and the altered laptop and projector.
